| My husband has a 50% shared custody of his kids and this is how I feel about it Posted: 04 Jul 2022 04:00 PM PDT [English is not my first language] TL;DR at the end I (30 F) never wanted kids - and still don't want to birth a child of my own or be pregnant. I met my husband a few years ago on Tinder (yes, I know!). On his profile, you could read that he liked poetry, food, going to the movies, things like that, and that he had 2 kids. I will be very honest here, I used to swipe left men with kids. A part of me was scared of the potential drama and I also couldn't picture my anxious and over working self raising kids and co-parent. But when I read that he was into poetry, I swiped right and it was an instant match so I messaged him first and kindly asked if I could read his poems. He accepted so I read them. Poetry tells a lot about someone, it's like a way to instantly have access to someone's dreams, vulnerability, hopes or even traumas. He is an amazing writer. He asked if I liked poetry and I said yes but I was not able to send pictures of some poems I had at home on Tinder so I asked for his name to send him a message on Messenger. We talked all night long. It was January 1st. The next day, he said: I will probably look like a serial killer but can I take you out for a beer? Man. This wonderful and beautiful man showed up to my door in the evening and it was love at first sight. We took our time before I met his kids, for many obvious reasons. One day, the kid's mother agreed for me to meet them since my relationship with their father was serious. I will never forget this day. They were 8 and 11 years old. So small, so cute, and so shy! I thought I would have been the shy one but it was not the case. The four of us had dinner. My stepdaughter gave me my first drawing - the first of so so so many. It was a rainbow and I legit cried. I was just emotional. Meeting them was like meeting another part of the man I fell in love with. I loved them on the spot. And I kept that drawing. After this first dinner, I also met my husband's ex-wife, we had a nice chat and started to know each other. I was afraid of her not being comfortable with me being around. But she was comfortable. And despite us being very different, I think she can be a very kind and open minded person. When mother's day happened for the first time since I met my husband, I made the kids write their mother a letter for mother's day and we bought her something. Do you know what happened when they came back? They came back with a letter for me. A mother's day letter FOR ME. That she made with them. This is one of my best core memory. Seeing my step daughter coming back with an envelope and telling me very loudly, without even removing her shoes: WE GOT YOU THIS FOR MOTHER'S DAY! LOOK! 3 years later, I am watching these amazing teenagers swimming and waving at me while I am working from home. We had a nice moment at lunch together while their dad is at work. Being a step mother is not easy, and I had so much to learn but also so much to give and receive. I used to drink a lot before I met them. I loved my life and career but it was kind of boring. Work, bars, party, having dinners with friends, having money, these things are nice and I was lucky. But I feel luckier. I gained a husband and 2 kids old enough for me to trust myself helping to raise them. I am also 2 years sober. They are both so funny, and I think it's a wonderful privilege for me to be able to see them growing and developing their own personalities. I grew up in a very unhappy home. My father was an extremely strict religious man. We don't even talk anymore because I didn't follow his faith. He is missing something amazing. I still would not want to birth a child or get pregnant. My husband got a vasectomy after us discussing that. But man. I feel exactly like I was feeling in science and physic class at school. Completely amazed by what I am seeing. These two tiny humans that used to fight each other over a nice rock are now teenagers helping each other with everything. They are so close to the 4 parents raising them. They have friends, passions, they enjoy life. Life is not always easy but they make it fun. I can't remember a day without hearing them laugh out loud. I am so grateful. And I love their mother. She is a kind of strict, very feminine blond soccer mom with a mini-van, I am a bald heavily tattooed woman who dresses like a dude. If you saw us at the park, you'd say to yourself: these women could never be friend. It still makes me laugh to think about the face she made when she first saw me and how quick she kind of smiled to make sure I didn't notice. I'm not mad about that at all and it's logical for me to face some reaction after choosing to look like I do. Still funny to me to think about how different we physically are and how surprised she seemed. But I love her and beside our looks, we are not that different. I love her for giving birth to them and for loving them the way she does. I love her for the way their eyes look when they tell me they went here and there with their mom. I love her for being honest with herself enough to leave when she felt the relationship was not what she needed anymore instead of staying. I love her for telling me last year that « it's okay for you to make decision for the kids, we are raising them together. ». I love her for telling me « Can you help me discuss this topic with [the kid]? ». I love her for sharing this wonderful experience with me and giving me the space to not just be the wife but also the step mother. I love her for going through everything she went through to give birth to the most important humans in my life. It's probably the best thing that ever happened to me. EDIT: Someone in the comment asked me who won the rock so here is my edit. This rock story has many chapters! When I met them, they were big fans of Harry Potter. One night, I painted rocks with golden paint and hide them under their pillows and in the morning, I told them I found a special rock under my pillow that looked just like it's from a magical universe! They ran to their room and the older found his rock first so the youngest cried and said she wanted it. They fought for like 30 seconds until I said: Are you sure you don't have one too under your pillow? So they both got one that day and way more in the months after. Now they know it was me but they kept the shiny rocks. Also, thank you so much for your comments, awards and messages. I didn't know who to share my joy with today so I chose reddit and I don't regret it. TL;DR: I met a man on Tinder who had kids and I swiped right despite not wanting kids because we had a common hobby: poetry.
