| LG's New CineBeam Projector Will Up Your Movie Watching Experience Posted: 20 May 2022 07:47 AM PDT  LG has a foot in the home theater market with its TVs and its soundbars. The company also makes projectors for that movie theater feel. Now, LG just announced a new CineBeam Ultra Short Throw (UST) projector that promises to show a crisp 4K picture at only 5.6cm from the wall. LG already announced a premium UST projector earlier this year. That particularly pricey projector was the CineBeam HU715Q. It could produce a 100-inch 4K image on the wall while sitting just under 9 inches from the wall. This projector was premium in every way (well, it DOES cost $3,000). Now, the new LG CineBeam HU915QE projector makes some improvementsLG decided to take the formula it introduced earlier this year and make some improvements. This projector has the model number HU915QE, and it's also able to produce an image on the wall while requiring minimal space. This projector can show a 90-inch 4K image on the wall while sitting just 5.6cm (just over 2 inches) from that wall. If you want a bigger image, you can produce a large 120-inch (10 feet) image on the wall by pulling the projector back to 18.3 (Just over 7 inches). This means that it can produce an image that's 20% larger than its predecessor's while sitting about 20% closer to the wall. Just know that enlarging the screen will lead to a drop in image quality. You can expect great picture quality from this projectorIt doesn't matter how big the screen can get if the picture quality is poor. However, the LG HU915QE projector has the goods to make a great view experience. For starters, this projector has a peak brightness of 3,700 nits. It produces a 4K HDR picture with a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio. When it comes to smarts, this projector uses HDR Dynamic Tone Mapping for each frame of the content. It also uses the ambient light in the room to optimize the brightness so that you're getting the best brightness for the conditions. As far as audio is concerned, you can expect some loud and punchy sound. The HU915QE has a 2.2 channel, 40Watt speaker system. When it comes to connections, the projector has 3 HDMI ports, it's compatible with Bluetooth, and it uses Screen Mirroring and Apple AirPlay 2. If you're interested in picking up one of these, you'll need to wait. LG states that it will launch before Q3 2022 in key markets. There's no word on the price, but if you want one, you'll definitely need to start saving up now! | Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, 7 Gen 1 Arrive With Power & Performance Boost Posted: 20 May 2022 07:39 AM PDT  Qualcomm has unveiled two new smartphone processors — the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. The former is the usual mid-year refresh of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 launched in late 2021. The latter, on the other hand, is essentially the successor to last year’s Snapdragon 778G with the new naming scheme. Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 specifications and featuresThe Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is still based on a 4nm process node, but it’s manufactured by TSMC (Samsung manufactured the preceding solution). We were expecting it to be more power-efficient thanks to TSMC’s advanced chip fabrication tech, and the company didn’t disappoint us. Qualcomm is touting the new chipset to bring some notable power and performance boosts. According to the company, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is up to 10 percent faster in both CPU and GPU departments. The chipset has its CPU clocked at 3.2GHz. These upgrades will allow for ultra-smooth responsiveness, not just in day-to-day usage, but in heavy gaming as well. Qualcomm says the chipset will enable desktop-level gaming capabilities on phones. The new processor also consumes 30 percent less power. Qualcomm’s 7th Gen AI Engine also enables up to 20 percent better performance per watt. In real life, this means additional gameplay of about an hour, 80 minutes of video streaming, or 5.5 hours of talk time. Powered by Qualcomm’s X65 5G Modem-RF System, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is touted to deliver up to 10 Gbps of peak download speeds. It supports LPDDR5 RAM with a frequency of 3200MHz and can handle QHD+ resolution displays at a 144 Hz refresh rate. The chipset can also handle up to 200-megapixel cameras with 8K video recording in Dolby Vision and HDR10+ formats. Other key specs include USB 3.1, Bluetooth 5.3, Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 tri-band Wi-Fi system with a peak speed of 3.6Gbps, global 5G multi-SIM, 5G uplink carrier aggregation, NFC, and 16-bit 44.1kHz CD-quality lossless music streaming. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 will start appearing inside devices from ASUS, Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and several other brands in Q3 2022. Targeted at premium mid-range smartphones, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 has its CPU clocked at 2.4GHz. This is also a 4nm chipset, and it comes with an improved Adreno GPU. It delivers over 20 percent faster graphics rendering compared to its predecessor, i.e. the Snapdragon 778G. This chipset comes with an integrated 5G modem, but download speed tops up at 4.4Gbps. It does support LPDDR5 RAM, global 5G multi-SIM, tri-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, USB 3.1, and up to 200-megapixel cameras. However, it can only capture 4K videos and FHD+ resolution displays at a refresh rate of 144 Hz. The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 uses Qualcomm’s 7th Gen AI Engine for up to 30 percent improved AI performance. It also features the company’s Trust Management Engine and Android Ready SE, a first for the Snapdragon 7-series processor. This chipset will start shipping inside phones this quarter. HONOR, OPPO, and Xiaomi will launch products with the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC in the coming months. | Americans Would Rather Pay Less For Streaming And See Ads Posted: 20 May 2022 07:59 AM PDT  According to a new survey out of Morning Consult, apparently, Americans would rather pay less for streaming and deal with ads. Than pay more for an ad-free experience. The survey was conducted from March 4-6, 2022 and it surveyed about 2,211 people. So not really a good representation of the US population, but it does provide some interesting insights. Among all US Adults, 27% would rather pay more for streaming and not have ads, while 57% would like to have low-cost or free streaming with ads. Which is actually rather impressive. When Netflix and Disney+ announced they would be adding ads to their platform, many were not happy. So that kind of shows us that the vocal minority doesn't want ads. Morning Consult also broke down this survey based on a number of other demographics, including Gen Z Adults, Millennials, Gen X, Baby Boomers, White, Hispanic, Black, and Other Race or Ethnicity. Interestingly, Baby Boomers were the most interested in an ad-supported tier, at 61%. Though, they are also likely not used to paying for streaming services, so that makes sense.
Ads are likely how streaming services are going to stay afloatIn the US, in particular, streaming is pretty saturated and getting pretty expensive. We're even seeing big names like Netflix losing over 200K customers in their most recent quarter. Which is pretty insane. So how can streaming companies keep their customers? Well, with ad-supposed tiers. That's because the ads can help to offset the price of their service. As we've seen with HBO MAX, which was always $14.99 and ad-free (even before it was HBO MAX), debuted an ad-supported tier that is now $9.99. That's a much easier pill to swallow, even though it is only $5 less per month. Ads can likely make up the difference and then some for ad-supported tiers. Especially once advertisers start competing for that space on these services. But it's also important to keep the option for ad-supported and ad-free tiers. So that everyone can have what they want.
