| Here's Your First Look At The Motorola Moto G42 Posted: 19 May 2022 04:03 AM PDT  The Motorola Moto G42 has just surfaced, providing us with the very first look at the device. Six images appeared, courtesy of Abhishek Yadav, a tipster. These are actually renders of the device, showing us the phone from almost all angles. First look at the Motorola Moto G42 reveals a familiar designBased on this, the Moto G42 will resemble its predecessor, the Moto G41, a lot. Many people wouldn't even be able to tell the difference between the two phones. The Moto G41 launched back in November last year, by the way. We're not sure when will the Moto G42 arrive, but this is what it will look like, it seems. You can expect a flat display to be included, along with a centered display camera hole. The bottom bezel on the device will be thicker than the rest of them. Three cameras will be included on the back of the phone, and they will be vertically-aligned. All will be placed in the top-left corner. Motorola's branding will be present on the back of the phone, in two spots, actually. We're not sure if a fingerprint scanner will be a part of the packageAll the physical buttons will sit on the right-hand side of the phone, and it seems like its power/lock key won't double as a fingerprint scanner, at least by the looks of it. A Type-C port will sit at the bottom of the phone, along with a microphone, and the phone's main speaker. One of these images also gives you an idea as to how much will the camera setup protrude on the back. We're not sure what will this color variant be called, but it does resemble the 'Pearl Gold' Moto G41. So, we presume that the 'Gold' part will be in its name. The source didn't really share any spec info just yet. We do know that the Moto G42 will be a budget phone, though, so don't expect miracles in the spec department. The information comes from @Shadow_Leak and Digital Chat Station. Before we get down to it, it's worth noting that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ is expected to arrive tomorrow. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ gets detailed one day before its launchQualcomm scheduled a press event in China for May 20. We do know this is a Snapdragon event, but we still didn't get a confirmation that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ will launch. That seems quite certain at this point, though. Not only did the SoC's details surface, but it's just the right time to launch it. It is worth noting that the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 will probably launch alongside the company's flagship SoC. In any case, let's check out the details that leaked. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ is a 4nm processor. That's something that we already knew, but it's worth noting regardless. This processor will be made by TSMC. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ will be comprised out of one Cortex X2 core, three Cortex A710 cores, and four Cortex A510 cores. Its GPU will see a slight update compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, it seems. The Adreno 730 GPU will be included, by the way. The performance will increase by 10%, power consumption decrease by 30%The performance will be increased by 10-percent, while the power consumption will be decreased by 30-percent. The Cortex X2 will be clocked at 3.2GHz, while the Cortex A710 cores will be clocked at 2.75GHz. The Cortex A510 cores are said to utilize a 2.0GHz clock speed. This variant of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is expected to deliver better thermals. So, in addition to these performance boosts, it's also expected to heat up less. It remains to be seen what will the difference be. The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, on the other hand, will be a mid-range processor. We don't know much about it at this point, but it will likely be used by many smartphones in H2 2022. | Google Unveils 'Now in Android' App For Developers Posted: 19 May 2022 05:15 AM PDT  Google has officially released the 'Now in Android' app on GitHub, aiming to help developers keep in sync with the changing landscape of Android software development. The Now in Android app will help developers solve "complex real-world problems""Firstly, it showcases best practices, opinionated designs, and solutions to complex real-world problems which other sample apps don't handle," Google said of the new app in a blog post (via XDA). "Secondly, it helps you (the developer) keep up to date with the areas of Android development which interest you most." Google added that the Now in Android app is in the process of making it to the Play Store. But as it stands, this alpha release is limited to GitHub. In terms of features, developers can expect Material3 theme components, UI built out of Jetpack Compose, layouts that can adapt to varying screen sizes, an architecture in line with Google's "official guidance," and more. The Now in Android app was first showcased at the I/O 2022 conference. "We have some exciting features planned, such as user authentication and loading data from a real backend," Google said about the future. However, the company didn't offer any information on the timeline. Google also launched the second Android 13 beta during I/O 2022The company had some other exciting announcements at I/O 2022, including the new Pixel 6a. It features the same price tag as the Pixel 5a ($449) but with a handful of hardware upgrades. Unfortunately, pre-orders for the phone won't start until July 21, while availability is scheduled for July 28. Additionally, Google launched Android 13 Beta 2 during last week's developer conference with some new features in tow. Surprisingly, Google gave us an early glimpse at the Pixel 7 and the Pixel 7 Pro. The two flagships are scheduled to reach markets this fall, featuring an upgraded Tensor chipset and Android 13. Google didn't go too much into detail about the new Tensor chip. But we expect there to be some significant improvements considering last year's lukewarm response. The Pixel 7 will reportedly sell in Obsidian, Snow, and Lemongrass colors, whereas the Pro flagship will ship in Obsidian, Snow, and Hazel shades. | Huawei Mate Xs 2 Foldable Goes Global With A Premium Price Tag Posted: 19 May 2022 02:05 AM PDT  Huawei has announced its new foldable smartphone, the Mate Xs 2, for global markets. The company hosted an event in Milan, where it announced the Mate Xs 2, alongside the Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro, and some other devices. The Huawei Mate Xs 2 arrives to global markets following its China launchThe Huawei Mate Xs 2 was originally announced back in April, in China. Well, we're getting an almost identical device in global markets, though with a different software build, of course. The Mate Xs 2 is an outward-folding smartphone. In other words, it has a single display, which folds towards the back, so a part of it is always exposed, and serves as a back side of a folded smartphone. Many would say that's not the most fortunate solution, but there you have it. This is a direct successor to the Huawei Mate Xs, which arrived quite a while ago. It includes a single 120Hz display which folds towards the backThe Mate Xs 2 is actually quite a powerful smartphone. It features a 7.8-inch 2480 x 2200 OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, and 240Hz touch sampling rate. It folds into a 6.5-inch 2480 x 1176 panel, with the same refresh rate, of course. The Snapdragon 888 fuels this smartphone, though it only allows for 4G connectivity due to US sanctions. Huawei included 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM into this global variant, with 512GB of UFS 3.1 flash storage. You can expand that storage with a microSD card up to 256GB. HarmonyOS 2 comes pre-installed on top of Android, though the exact Android version wasn't mentioned. We'll guess it's Android 12. There are two nano SIM card slots included, and you can use one of them for a microSD card (hybrid setup). A 4,600mAh battery is included, along with 66W chargingA 4,600mAh battery comes included, with 66W wired charging. The collector's edition of the device includes a 4,880mAh battery, and we're not sure it will become available outside of China. A 50-megapixel main camera (f/1.8 aperture) is backed by a 13-megapixel ultrawide camera (f/2.2 aperture, 2.5cm macro), and an 8-megapixel telephoto camera (f/2.4 aperture, 3x optical zoom, 30x digital zoom, OIS). A single 10.7-megapixel camera (f/2.2 aperture) sits on the phone's front side. Bluetooth 5.2 LE is included here, and the same goes for an NFC chip. The phone's power/lock key doubles as a fingerprint scanner, while stereo speakers are also a part of the package. The phone measures 156.5 x 139.3 x 5.4-11.1mm when unfolded, and 156.5 x 75.5 x 11.1mm when folded. The device weighs 255 grams. The device is actually quite priceyThe Huawei Mate Xs 2 comes in Black, White, and Violet color variants. Now the price is quite high, the model is priced at €1,999 in Europe. Galaxy Z Flip 4 Processor & Battery Details Confirmed Posted: 19 May 2022 04:12 AM PDT  Samsung's fourth-gen foldables — Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4— are gradually taking shape. As we inch toward their official unveiling in a few months, new details about the devices keep popping up. Today, we have confirmation that the Flip 4 will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ processor. The Fold 4 should get the same chipset too. The US version of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 has appeared on benchmarking website Geekbench with model number SM-F721U. The listing reveals that the device will feature Qualcomm's "taro" processor. While the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is also identified by the same codename, the higher clock speeds confirm it is the "Plus" iteration that will go official tomorrow, May 20th. The new chipset features a triple cluster CPU arrangement with one Super core clocked at 3.19GHz, three mid-cores at 2.75GHz, and four power-efficient CPU cores at 1.80GHz. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 scored 3,800 points on Geekbench's multi-core tests. The single-core tests achieved 1,283 points. The Geekbench listing also reveals that the Galaxy Z Flip 4 will get 8GB of RAM, though there may be a 6GB RAM variant as well. The device will expectedly run Android 12 out of the box. Android 13 won't quite be ready in time for the new foldable. We do expect Samsung to ship the phone with a newer One UI skin, possibly called One UI 4.5.
The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is getting a bigger battery tooThere have been contrasting reports regarding the battery capacity of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 over the past few weeks. While the device was initially reported to get a 3,400mAh battery, recent reports suggest Samsung will equip the foldable with a 3,700mAh unit. It appears the latter was true. The upcoming clamshell foldable just picked up a 3C certification in China for its batteries. We can see it houses two battery units with capacities of 2,555mah and 1,040mAh. The combined capacity comes in at 3,595mAh. Samsung will likely advertise it as a typical capacity of 3,700mah. A separate 3C certification for the Galaxy Z Flip 4's charger earlier this month revealed that the new foldable will also see a much-needed upgrade in terms of charging speed. It will now come with 25W fast charging, over the 15W that the Flip 3 shipped with. Don't expect Samsung to include the charging adapter in the retail box though. The company may be facing legal actions over the decision in some countries but it's unlikely to retract unless forced to.

| May Update For The US Galaxy S20 FE 5G Is Rolling Out Widely Posted: 19 May 2022 04:30 AM PDT  Following the unlocked variants last week, the May 2022 Android security patch is now rolling out to the carrier-locked Galaxy S20 FE 5G phones in the US. The new update is initially available to users on the Sprint network. But it should be only a matter of time before the rollout expands to other networks. The May SMR (Security Maintenance Release) for the carrier-locked variants of the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G in the US comes with firmware version G781USQS7FVD4. This update fixes around 50 security vulnerabilities. The majority of those issues were discovered on Google's version of Android and were patched by the Android maker. But more than a dozen of those were specific to Samsung devices and were accordingly fixed by the Korean behemoth. These security fixes have been rolling out to Samsung's Android-powered smartphones and tablets since late April. Most eligible devices have picked up the new SMR over the past three weeks. The Galaxy S20 FE has also received it in most parts of the world. The users of carrier-locked variants of the affordable Samsung flagship were among the few left. The Korean firm is now seeding the patch to them as well. In addition, the May SMR is also today rolling out to Samsung's Galaxy A23. The new mid-ranger is getting the update in some European countries. A Global rollout should come within a few days. Speaking of a global rollout, the Galaxy Note 10 series is now getting this month's security patch in more parts of the world. The rollout for the Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy Note 10+, and Galaxy Note 10+ 5G began in the US last week. It has now reached Asia and Europe too. If you own any of the aforementioned Samsung smartphones and haven't yet received the May update, it won't be a much longer wait now. You should soon get a notification for the OTA (over the air) rollout. You can also manually check for updates by navigating to Settings > Software update on your phone and tapping on Download and install. Samsung may release the June SMR next weekDespite making a plethora of smartphones every year, Samsung is the best when it comes to software support. Not only does it delivers updates on time, but it also does so ahead of time. The company releases a new security patch even before the new month has arrived. This has been a trend for well over a year now and we expect it to continue next month as well. So we wouldn't be surprised if the June SMR starts rolling out to some Galaxy devices next week. | Google Lens Update For Tablets Brings Landscape Orientation Support Posted: 19 May 2022 03:19 AM PDT  At Google I/O 2022 last week, the company announced that it will update over 20 of its first-party apps for Android tablets. This is to enable the apps to take better advantage of the larger screens on those devices. The updating spree has begun with Google Lens earning the distinction of receiving it first. First spotted by 9to5Google, the latest beta version (v13.19) of the Google app for Android brings a key change to Google Lens on tablets. The visual search tool now supports landscape orientation on larger screens. Earlier, it worked only in portrait orientation on all Android devices, including tablets and foldables. According to the new report, Google Lens now has a widescreen UI when used in landscape orientation on tablets. The UI elements are spaced out and all filters fit on the screen when in the live viewfinder. On phones, you have to scroll through a bottom carousel to access all filters. As you'd expect, the results sheet is wider too, allowing more items to fit in. But Google has still left some screen space blank on either edge. The gallery view makes full use of the screen, though. Of course, there's no major change to the functionality of Google Lens. But this optimization for large screen devices would elevate the user experience on tablets. Since Google Lens resides within the Google app on Android, this change should be available to everyone with an upcoming update for the latter on the stable channel. As the new report notes, the rest of the app, including Assistant, is already optimized for tablets. So don't expect any changes there.       A similar update will roll out to more Google apps for Android tabletsAs said earlier, Google has promised these kinds of optimization for more than 20 first-party apps. We already know How Google Clock and Calculator will look on tablets following the update. These apps should get the update soon. The likes of Google Maps, YouTube Music, Google Messages, Google Play, Gmail, Google Home, Google TV, and Google One will also see similar optimizations in the coming weeks. We will keep you posted.
