It’s going to take a lot more than Neil Young to change Spotify’s mind about Joe Rogan

Other musicians aren’t boycotting the music service. Will you?

Sometimes it’s hard to predict the future.

Other times it’s really easy: Back in the spring of 2020, it was incredibly obvious that by paying Joe Rogan a ton of money for the exclusive rights to his podcast, Spotify would inevitably find itself under fire. Because a big part of Rogan’s appeal — we don’t know how big his audience is, but double-digit millions seems reasonable — is courting controversy by interviewing the likes of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.

Sure enough, the list of people criticizing Spotify over its Rogan deal — and the content Rogan has put out since then — includes Spotify’s own employees, who complained that his podcast is transphobic, and 270 doctors and other health experts, who wrote an open letter saying Rogan’s podcasts were “mass-misinformation events” that have been “provoking distrust in science and medicine” during the pandemic, for hosting the likes of Robert Malone, an anti-vaxxer who’s been banned by Twitter.

And now rock star Neil Young, who said those doctors’ open letter opened his eyes to the “dangerous life-threatening Covid falsehoods found in Spotify programming,” has taken his music off the service in protest.

So. How big a deal is this?

Here’s one data point: My brother-in-law just texted me asking for recommendations for a new streaming service. Young’s argument — that by paying for Rogan’s podcast, “Spotify has become the home of life-threatening Covid misinformation. Lies being sold for money” — has hit home for him. (For the record, you can still find Young’s music on Amazon, Apple, and every other streaming platform.)

Here’s a competing data point – a list of prominent musicians following Young’s lead and pulling their catalogs from Spotify as well:

It’s possible, of course, that things could change. Back when Neil Young was making popular music in the 1960s and ’70s, famous musicians routinely made political arguments, and sometimes even put their own livelihoods at risk in doing so. The Nixon administration, for instance, put John Lennon under FBI surveillance and at one point tried to deport him because of his work protesting the Vietnam War.

But that level of activism is almost completely absent from today’s lineup of popular musicians, who will sometimes tweet about things they don’t like but generally leave it at that. Taylor Swift has fought with Spotify, Apple, and a music manager who bought the rights to her catalog, but those disputes were all about money and control, not ideology or vaccines.

To his credit, Young — a famously cantankerous character who has complained about streaming for years — is clear-eyed about what his pullout will mean: “I sincerely hope that other artists can make a move, but I can’t really expect that to happen,” he wrote on his website this week.

So unless there are a lot of people like my brother-in-law, expect Spotify to do what it has done every time people have complained about their deal with Rogan: nothing.

Spotify is betting billions of dollars that podcasting will be a meaningful business, and Rogan is the biggest podcaster in the world. It would have to take much, much more than the absence of a legacy act that hasn’t released a popular song since 1989 to get it to change course.

Spotify will take issue with that characterization, of course. It says it takes all this stuff very seriously, and routinely examines content on its service to see if it violates content policies, which it has yet to disclose publicly. Here, for the record, is the company’s statement:

“We want all the world’s music and audio content to be available to Spotify users. With that comes great responsibility in balancing both safety for listeners and freedom for creators. We have detailed content policies in place and we’ve removed over 20,000 podcast episodes related to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. We regret Neil’s decision to remove his music from Spotify, but hope to welcome him back soon.”

It’s worth pointing out here that Spotify, like other tech companies that distribute media, is fundamentally uncomfortable making decisions about what kind of media it does and doesn’t want to distribute. See, for instance, its 2018 decision to remove musicians like R. Kelly — who had long been accused of sexual misconduct — from its playlists but not from the service itself. After a few weeks of criticism from artists and managers, it abandoned the policy. (Kelly was convicted on racketeering and sex trafficking charges three years later; his music remains on Spotify.)

And while Spotify often argues that, just like YouTube, Twitter, or Facebook, it’s simply a neutral platform that connects creators with people who want to engage with the stuff those creators make, that argument doesn’t work in Rogan’s case: While he’s not technically working for Spotify, he is very much getting paid by them, to make stuff you can’t hear anywhere but Spotify.

But so far that distinction hasn’t mattered. Every so often, Spotify gets asked about Rogan, and the company answers with the equivalent of a shrug. “For us, it’s about having a diverse voice of people, for a global audience,” content chief Dawn Ostroff told me a year ago. “And he happens to remain wildly popular.”

Expect more questions to arise next week, when Spotify announces its quarterly earnings. Don’t expect a different answer.

iOS 15 Problems: 5 Things You Need to Know

Posted: 27 Jan 2022 01:24 PM PST

iOS 15 Problems: 5 Things You Need to Know is a post by Adam Mills from Gotta Be Mobile.

Apple's iOS 15.3 update wipes out some glaring issues, but problems have slipped into Apple's latest iOS 15 release for iPhone.

Apple's pulled its long-awaited iOS 15 operating system out of beta. The update is available for the iPhone 6s and newer and it brings a long list of new features including upgrades to Messages and Maps.

iOS 15 also features under-the-hood improvements and some iPhone users are already noticing a huge difference after moving their device up from iOS 14.

On the flip side, some iPhone users have already run into a variety of bugs and performance issues. Some of these issues have carried over from iOS 14, others are brand new.

Apple continues to refine iOS 15 with software updates and the latest release, iOS 15.3, brings some much-needed bug fixes to iPhone users.

In this guide to iOS 15 problems we'll take you through the current state of these issues. We'll show you where to find potential fixes for the most common iOS 15 problems and provide you with some resources that should help if you run into trouble.

We'll also touch on the state of the iOS downgrade and outline what you can expect from Apple and iOS 15 down the road.

iOS 15 Problems

The current list of iOS 15 problems includes some very common issues. iPhone users are having trouble downloading and installing the new software. If your iOS 15 installation gets stuck, try hard resetting your phone. This typically resolves the issue.

We're also seeing complaints about UI lag, AirPlay issues, Touch ID and Face ID issues, abnormal battery drain, issues with first and third-party apps, iMessage issues, Wi-Fi problems, various issues with Siri, ongoing noise cancellation issues, Bluetooth problems particularly with hands-free systems in cars, CarPlay issues, lockups, freezes, and crashes.

iPhone users who have moved to iOS 15 are also complaining about touch issues where the display doesn't respond to swipes and gestures. This issue appears fairly widespread and we've noticed it on an iPhone 12 Pro.

We've also heard about an issue impacting read receipts in the Messages app. Some iOS 15 users are saying read receipts are still active even when they're turned off. It's unclear how widespread this issue is. We haven't seen it on any of the iPhone models in our possession.

We expect the list of iOS 15 problems to grow as more people transition from iOS 14 to iOS 15 and from older iOS 15 software to the latest version.

If you haven't downloaded the latest version of iOS 15 yet, we recommend preparing your iPhone for the download. Some prep work ahead of time can help you avoid major headaches.

We've put together a step-by-step pre-installation process and it will take you through the best way to prepare for the move.

Where to Find iOS 15 Reviews

If you're currently running iOS 15, or if you're planning to upgrade, you'll want to sift through feedback from early adopters. This feedback will alert you to potential problems and performance issues others are having on the same iPhone model.

We've released our list of reasons to, and not to, install the iOS 15 update and it's a good starting point for those of you weighing a move up from iOS 14. It will also help if you're weighing a move from older iOS 15 software to the latest version.

We also recommend keeping an eye on YouTube, Apple's discussion forums, social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, and the MacRumors forums for additional feedback about the latest version of iOS 15.

How to Fix iOS 15 Problems

Some iOS 15 issues might require a fix from Apple, but you may be able to fix others on your own.

Before you get in contact with Apple support, have a look at our list of fixes for the most common iOS problems. It might have a fix that works for you.

We've also released some tips that could help you improve your device's performance and a guide that shows you how to fix iOS battery life problems. If you're running into severe battery drain issues on iOS 15, have a look at those.

If you can't find what you're looking for in our guides, you should head on over to Apple's discussion forums. If they can't help you, you might want to get in contact with Apple Support via Twitter or customer support via Apple's website.

If you still can't fix your issue(s), you might want to schedule an appointment to see a Genius at your local Apple Store. They should be able to diagnose your problem.

iOS Downgrade Status

If you run into bugs or performance issues on iOS 15, you can try downgrading your iPhone's software in an effort to improve its performance. That is, if the option is available. Currently, it is.

Apple is signing on iOS 15.2.1 which means you can move your iPhone to the previous versions of iOS 15 if iOS 15.3 starts causing problems on your device.

Unfortunately, the company isn't signing on iOS 15.2, iOS 15.1.1, iOS 15.1, iOS 15.0.2, iOS 15.0.1, iOS 15.0, iOS 14.8, iOS 14.7.1, iOS 14.7, or any older versions of iOS.

Initially it looked like Apple would allow users to stay on iOS 14 and continue to receive security updates and, perhaps, bug fixes for lingering issues, but that's changed it seems.

Apple hasn't pushed a new version of iOS 14 since the release of iOS 14.8.1 in October and that update is now gone. Devices running on iOS 14.8 and below can only move to the latest version of iOS 15.

This is important because it means there likely won't be a way to downgrade from iOS 15 to iOS 14 moving forward. The only way this happens is if Apple releases a new version of iOS 14.

For more about how the downgrade process works, take a look at our walkthrough.

What's Next

If your iPhone is struggling on iOS 15.2.1, iOS 15.2, iOS 15.1.1, iOS 15.1, iOS 15.0.2, iOS 15.0.1, or iOS 15.0, you'll probably be on your own for a few weeks.

Apple's confirmed a new iOS 15.4 update for iPhone and the firmware is currently in beta testing ahead of its public release.

The company hasn't confirmed a specific iOS 15.4 release date, but we expect the software to land this spring alongside new hardware.

If your problems on iOS 15.3 (or below) are really bad, you might try moving your iPhone to the iOS 15.4 beta. There's a chance it helps.

For more on iOS 15.4 and the beta, have a peek at our walkthrough. For more information about the iOS 15.4 release date, check out our guide.

4 Reasons Not to Install iOS 15.3 & 11 Reasons You Should

Install iOS 15.3 for Better Security

Install iOS 15.3 for Better Security

If security is important to you, think about installing Apple's iOS 15.3 update right away.

Apple says iOS 15.3 has 10 new security patches on board. If you're interested in the details, you can read more about the patches right here.

If you missed iOS 15.2.1, you'll get its security patch with your upgrade. You can learn more about the change over on Apple's website

If you missed Apple's iOS 15.2 update, you'll get its 30+ security patches with your upgrade. You can read all about them over on the company's security site

iOS 15.2 also included some important upgrades to privacy. The software brought the company's App Privacy Report to Settings. This lets you see how often your apps have accessed your location, photos, camera, microphone, contacts and more during the last seven days. You can also see their network activity.

In addition, iOS 15.2 brought Apple's communication safety features for kids. You'll find these features in the Messages app, in Siri, in Spotlight, and in Search.

If you missed iOS 15.1, iOS 15.3 will bring its security patches to your iPhone. You can read more about them on Apple's website

If you missed iOS 15.0.2 you'll also get its security patch with your upgrade. You can learn more about it right here.

iOS 15.0 also brought numerous security patches to your iPhone. If you'll be moving up from iOS 14 and you're interested in the exact nature of these improvements, you can read about them over on Apple's security website.

Apple's updated its website with new information about iOS 15's batch of security patches. The company now says the software patched up an issue that could have exposed a user's private Apple ID information and in-app search history. It also says iOS 15 patched up an issue that allowed apps to override Privacy preferences.

If you skipped iOS 14.8 or any older versions of iOS, you'll get the security patches from those updates with your iOS 15.3 update as well.

In addition to those patches, iOS 15 comes with some security and privacy upgrades including improvements to Siri. Requests made to Siri are now processed on the device itself using Neural Engine. This makes it more secure.

If you're an Apple Card user, you'll now get a security code that changes regularly to use when you make online transactions.

Apple's also included a built-in authenticator that's similar to Google Authenticator. This will let you generate verification codes for enhanced sign-in security under your Passwords.

There's also a Mail feature that hides your IP address. The company will add a new App Privacy report feature in the next version of iOS 15 that will tell you when an app has accessed sensitive information.
