В Госдуму переданы почти 260 тысяч подписей с требованием отменить законодательство об "иностранных агентах". Они были собраны за два месяца с помощью петиции, размещённой на интернет–платформе Change.org.

Авторами петиции выступили более 200 средств массовой информации, некоммерческих, просветительских и благотворительных организаций, как признанных российскими власти "иноагентами", так и просто выступающих против репрессивного закона.

Законодательство об «иноагентах» — откровенно дискриминационное и неправовое: оно противоречит Конституции России и Европейской конвенции о защите прав человека и основных свобод.

С начала 2021 года Минюст России внес в реестр так называемых иностранных агентов 11 СМИ, 42 журналистов и 9 НКО. Эти организации и люди пополнили список из 221 «иноагента», принудительно внесенных российскими властями в соответствующие реестры в 2013–2020 годах. Мы оцениваем происходящее как акт государственного давления на СМИ и общественные организации. И само законодательство, и сложившаяся правоприменительная практика направлены на ослабление институтов гражданского общества.

Ранее спикер Совета Федерации Валентина Матвиенко заявила, что речи об отмене закона об "иноагентах" идти не может, не исключив при этом возможности его уточнения. С подобным комментарием выступил также пресс–секретарь президента России Дмитрий Песков.
Вместе с тем оба чиновника категорически отвергли обвинения в том, что закон используется исключительно как инструмент репрессий в отношении независимых СМИ и неправительственных организаций.

Закон об иностранных агентах был принят в России в 2012 году. Он позволяет властям признавать "иноагентом" любую некоммерческую организацию, получившую деньги из–за рубежа и ведущую, с точки зрения властей, политическую деятельность. Критерии, по которым определяется такая деятельность, в законе чётко не определены, что позволяет властям преследовать независимые СМИ, организации, работающие в области просвещения, культуры, здравоохранения и экологии. При этом за девять лет существования закона его несколько раз ужесточали, расширив его действие не только на организации, но и на частных лиц. Нарушителей закона штрафуют на сотни тысяч рублей.

Д–р Юваль Гиалчински лечит пороки развития плода прямо в матке матери. Операции на сердце, легких и позвоночнике нерожденных детей требуют ювелирной точности и служат единственной заменой аборту
В это невозможно поверить, если не видеть своими глазами уникальную работу хирурга, который исправляет врожденные дефекты плода прямо в матке беременной женщины. Заведующий центром медицины плода больницы "Бейлинсон" д–р Юваль Гиалчински ежедневно занимается спасением будущих детей от инвалидности и смерти.
Однажды на прием к доктору пришла женщина на 22 неделе беременности. У ее плода обнаружили смертельно опасную анемию, вызванную инфекцией или иммунным конфликтом. В наши дни для постановки диагноза анемии плода не надо брать его кровь на анализ из пуповины – это видно на УЗИ. Лечат проблему переливанием донорской крови — один раз в 2–3 недели. Кровь вливают в пуповину, брюшную полость или прямо в сердце, предварительно усыпив плод анестетиком, вводимым в ножку тончайшей иглой.
Это ювелирная процедура, которую умеют проводить лишь несколько врачей в мире. Но для д–ра Гиалчински она вполне обычна. Однако не так было с данной пациенткой.
Из–за срока беременности пуповина оказалась слишком тонкой, и пришлось вводить кровь прямо в сердце плода. Во время переливания оно вдруг остановилось. У доктора оставались считанные минуты на его запуск — после этого наступили бы необратимые изменения мозга.
Он начал закрытый массаж сердца излучателем от прибора УЗИ, а затем шприцем ввел адреналин прямо в сердце плода — и оно заработало.
В другом случае в грудной полости плода росла большая опухоль, не дававшая легким расправиться. Обратив внимание, что опухоль получает кровь по единственному сосуду, доктор ввел в него иглу и заварил изнутри.
Через 2 недели лишенная кровоснабжения опухоль рассосалась, и развитие легких возобновилось без помех. После рождения в организме малыша не нашли даже следов опухоли, которая чуть его не убила.
Однажды доктор столкнулся со сложнейшим случаем — сросшейся тройней. Два близнеца были нежизнеспособными, у них было одно сердце на двоих. Из–за общности сосудистой сети третий малыш мог умереть после гибели братьев. И здесь удалось избежать аборта: при помощи лазера доктор отделил жизнеспособный плод от нежизнеспособных. Ребенок родился абсолютно здоровым.
Разумеется, случались и неудачи, когда маленький пациент умирал до родов или вскоре после них. Так, не удалось спасти плод с диафрагмальной грыжей, препятствовавшей развитию легких. Причину удалось устранить путем сложной операции, но к моменту рождения легкие не успели развиться, и малыш умер от дыхательной недостаточности.
Лечение неродившихся детей – это очень сложная задача, стоящая перед современной медициной. В матку вводится под местной анестезией тонкая трубочка – фетоскоп, к которой подсоединены видеокамера и крошечные инструменты, позволяющие проводить операции.
Д–ру Гиалчински довелось сделать сотни операций по коррекции различных патологий. Был случай, когда близнецы имели общую плаценту, и между ними происходил обмен кровью; доктор прижег лазером несколько сосудов и разделил системы кровообращения каждого из плодов. Бывало, он удалял замерший плод близнеца, позволяя его брату выжить. Он дренировал грудную полость плодов с избытком в ней жидкости и вводил им в сердце катетер для устранения врожденных пороков.
По словам доктора, лечение плодов сильно отличается от лечения уже родившихся детей, даже недоношенных. С другой стороны, матка является благоприятной средой для лечения, плод там более защищен, чем родившийся больной ребенок, кроме того, там присутствуют стволовые клетки, обладающие лечебным потенциалом.
Иногда родителям приходится сталкиваться с дилеммами этического свойства. Например, когда они должны дать согласие на перекрытие пуповины нежизнеспособного близнеца (что немедленно убивает его), чтобы спасти хотя бы одного из детей.
Благодаря профилактическому лечению фолиевой кислотой существенно снизилось число детей с таким врожденным пороком, как расщепление позвоночника (spina bifida), вызывающим тяжелую инвалидность. Но все же у некоторых плодов ставится такой диагноз. Обычно медики в таких случаях рекомендуют аборт. Но д–р Гиалчински и его коллеги предлагают родителям альтернативу — сложную внутриматочную операцию по коррекции порока. Удалив околоплодные воды и заменив их на углекислый газ, врачи делают 4 прокола в матке, через которые вводят миниатюрные инструменты. С их помощью они устраняют порок развития позвоночника и ушивают кожу. Затем околоплодные воды возвращают на место. В ходе операции анестетики вводятся женщине и попадают в организм плода через плаценту.
50–летний д–р Гиалчински по основной профессии гинеколог. Хирургии плода он обучался в Лондоне у основоположника этой отрасли медицины, кипрского профессора Кипроса Николаидеса. Именно он разработал такой метод внутриутробной УЗИ–диагностики синдрома Дауна, как измерение толщины шейной складки ("шкифут орпит"). В 2006 году д–р Гиалчински впервые увидел внутриматочную операцию плода и понял, что хочет этим заниматься.

As Omicron Arrives, Proven Protections Are Still The Best COVID Defense, Emergency Physicians Say

WASHINGTON, Dec. 8, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- New cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 are being identified across the country and the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) urges everyone to take action to prevent the spread of the virus.

"This new Omicron variant is concerning but we have the tools to protect ourselves and each other," said Gillian Schmitz, MD, FACEP, president of ACEP. "As we learn about the new strain, it's important to stick with the strategies proven to guard against the transmission of the virus: wash your hands, wear a mask indoors and in crowded places, and get vaccinated if you're eligible."

As holiday travel picks up, the Biden Administration outlined a new plan that includes extending the mask requirements on flights and public transportation and enacting other measures meant to expand vaccine availability and bolster the nation's defense against the virus as winter sets in.

Experts agree that the vaccine is the strongest protection available against all strains of COVID-19. The vaccine is safe and effective and recommended for everyone ages five and older. Each available vaccine meets rigorous requirements set by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). ACEP urges caretakers and families to get vaccinated and take the necessary steps to protect children during the winter months. Children are less likely to experience severe illness from COVID-19 than adults, but the risks from COVID are still significant. 

"COVID can be dangerous for patients of any age and the risks are compounded for those who remain unvaccinated," said Dr. Schmitz. "It's important to prioritize safe behaviors because we are still in the middle of a pandemic. Our best defense is the vaccine if we want to resume our normal activities and prevent serious illness and hospitalization."

Hospitals in parts of the country are at maximum capacity, and many of those patients are unvaccinated and suffering from COVID-19. Emergency physicians reiterate the importance of trusting proven science and avoiding unsourced information, bold claims, or instant cures about COVID, vaccines or treatments that are circulating on social media or among friends. Instead, seek information supported by data and backed by leading organizations.

"If the Omicron variant spreads quickly it means more unvaccinated patients will be in the emergency department. Meanwhile, cases are surging right now and some of our hospitals are getting stretched beyond their capacity," said Dr. Schmitz.

In this video -- the first in what Animal Outlook will release as a series spotlighting different aspects of animal agriculture -- viewers meet Winnie and learn the truth about the short, often painful lives of the millions of cows in the dairy industry. The video, narrated by actor and singer Daniella Monet, uses Animal Outlook footage from dairies in California and Pennsylvania; a calf ranch in Colorado; and slaughter facilities in California and New Jersey. It depicts animals in crowded, dirty conditions and covered in flies; calves taken from their mothers shortly after birth and force-fed milk replacer via tube; kicking, shoving, throwing, and other mistreatment and neglect of male calves due to their low value to the dairy industry; female calves subjected to hot-iron disbudding to remove horns without pain relief; cows artificially inseminated, hit, sprayed, kicked, punched, shocked, and hoisted by a metal hip clamp and dragged in an effort to get them to move; and finally killed, often in botched attempts that prolong suffering.

"The dairy industry wants you to believe that milk comes from happy cows -- but our investigation footage shows the heartbreaking reality," said Cheryl Leahy, executive director, Animal Outlook. "Behind every sip of milk or scoop of ice cream that comes from a cow, there is unacceptable abuse and exploitation; sadly, our investigations have shown time and time again that commonplace industry practices are so severely abusive that they'd result in criminal cruelty charges if inflicted on the dogs and cats in our homes. We hope our new video helps consumers understand the truth about the dairy industry."

Although cows have a natural lifespan of about 20 years, cows farmed for dairy are generally slaughtered for beef -- largely low-grade meat like hamburger or pet food -- at around six years old, as soon as milk production begins to drop. This short lifespan raises questions about the welfare and ethical use of cows for dairy, according to a 2020 report.

Plant-based milk—already a sizable category accounting for 15 percent of all sales of retail milk—experienced significant growth in 2020. Worth $2.5 billion, this category accounts for 35 percent of the total plant-based food market, according to market data from The Good Food Institute.

In stark contrast, there were 2,550 fewer licensed dairy operations in 2020 than in 2019, when the number dropped by 3,261. The overall number of licensed operations in the U.S. has marched steadily downward since data collection began, declining by more than 55 percent, from 70,375 in 2003 to 31,657 in 2020, according to market data provided by the Farm Bureau.

Android 12L: Everything You Need To Know

Android 12L is coming. Which might seem like a surprise, since Android 12 just launched a few months ago. But this is a new version of Android that will be released in the Spring of 2022 and will focus on making the OS work better on larger screen devices. That means really foldables and tablets.

That's very exciting because Google had kind of given up on tablets in previous years. And now it looks like it is taking them seriously again. Android 12L really only takes effect on screens that are over 600DPI. Meaning things like the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

Why is Google releasing Android 12L?

There's one big reason why Google is releasing Android 12L, and that's because we love big screens. There are over 250 million active large screen Android devices on the market today. And that's no small number. So Google is looking to release a version of Android that is going to optimize Android for those devices.

Google has done a tablet-specific OS in the past – remember Android 3 Honeycomb? But it eventually merged into regular Android, and then kind of got killed off. Now, Google is trying again. Android 12L will likely be a one-time thing, we don't expect to see an Android 13L next year. But at this point, who knows.

Google is actually referring to Android 12L as a "feature drop" and not a full version of Android. Google releases feature drops for Pixel phones about once a quarter already. So this seems pretty accurate. This update is so incremental that it's not even worthy of a "dot" update – meaning it won't be Android 12.1.

When will Android 12L be available?

The first developer preview for Android 12L launched in October of 2021. Google expects that the final build will come in the Spring of 2022. But as always with software, that could change and be delayed.

How many betas will there be?

Right now, we expect to see three betas for Android 12L. The first beta came in December, with the second one in January with Final APIs and the third in February as an incremental beta update. And the final release of Android 12L will come in the first quarter of 2022. Likely around March.

As we saw with Android 12, this could get delayed and pushed back a bit further. And we could also see an extra beta or two. However, since this is built on Android 12, with some small changes, it is possible that this may not need many beta releases before the stable release.

What devices will the beta be available for?

Initially, the beta for Android 12L is available on all Pixel devices and the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro Tablet. However, you won't see any Android 12L specific changes on Pixel devices, since their screens are not large enough.

How can I enroll in the beta?

If you have the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro tablet, you can enroll in the beta from Lenovo's website here. If you are a Pixel user, you can sign up for the beta here.

Unlike other Android beta's, this beta will not be available on other devices, most likely. Especially since this is a pretty quick beta phrase for Android 12L.

What features can we expect in Android 12L?

There's not really a lot of new features coming in Android 12L, Google is more optimizing the operating system to work better on these larger displays. So you'll see things like the overview screen, the quick settings and more getting optimized to use that extra space.

Revamped Overview Screen

The overview screen is getting a revamp with Android 12L. On Android 12, every app in the overview screen card looks the same. But with Android 12L, it'll be a bit different. Your most recently used app will be the largest, with other apps showing up as smaller cards. Four apps can fill the same space as one big app. Google is also letting them stack, so you can make the best use of this space.

Other than that, it does work the same as it does on Android 12 for smaller devices. However, you do not get the screenshot and select options at the bottom.

Quick Settings & notifications get a two-pane look

If you've used a tablet or even a Galaxy Z Fold 3, then you know how weird the Quick Settings can look on a screen that size. It's just super stretched out, and leaves little room to see notifications, especially if you're holding it in landscape mode.

But with Android 12L, Google is giving us a two-paned look for the Quick Settings and Notifications. Basically, the Quick Settings will be on the left, with notifications on the right. Making it a lot easier to use either, and much more readable.

Android 12L also gets a taskbar that looks very similar to the one in Chrome OS. Which is not a big surprise, since Google develops both operating systems. But this is going to give you more of a desktop-like mode for your foldable or tablet. It'll make it much easier to switch between apps on your device.

You'll also be able to resize any app and put it into a multiwindow mode. Of course, this is a feature that came with Android 12, but it'll also be available in Android 12L.

Google Play will start highlighting apps optimized for larger displays

Along with Android 12L, Google Play will start to highlight apps that are optimized for larger displays. So that users will be able to more easily find apps that they can download for their foldables and tablets.

Google says it is also adding more new checks to assess each apps' quality against its large screen app quality guidelines, that is to ensure that they surface the best possible apps on those devices.

It will also be introducing large-screen-specific app ratings, as announced in 2021, so that users will be able to rate how your app works on their large screen devices.

Now these changes to the Google Play Store won't be coming until 2022, but Google is making it easier for developers to get their apps ready for these changes.

Kraft Heinz Announces Intention To Combine U.S. And Canada Businesses To Form The North America Zone

The Kraft Heinz Company (Nasdaq: KHC) ("Kraft Heinz" or the "Company") announced today that it will combine its U.S. and Canada businesses to create the North America Zone, which is expected to be effective in the second fiscal quarter of 2022. The move is meant to advance the global food and beverage leader's long-term, sustainable growth plans—which were first outlined at its Investor Day event in September 2020—by bringing increased agility to its innovation agenda, operations, and go-to-market approach. The Company's U.S. and Canada businesses accounted for approximately 80% of its 2020 consolidated net sales.

In the last 12 months, Kraft Heinz has taken multiple steps to transform its overall growth profile, strategic focus, and financial flexibility, including divesting certain assets in its global cheese and nuts businesses. The Company has also centered its business around a consumer-first approach, significantly investing in its portfolio, digital solutions, customer relationships, and people.

The Company believes the creation of the North America Zone will further fuel Kraft Heinz's vision to leverage its scale through improved agility for competitive advantage. As a result, the following leadership changes are being made:

  • Kraft Heinz's new North America Zone will be led by Carlos Abrams-Rivera, currently U.S. Zone President. Since joining Kraft Heinz in February 2020, Abrams-Rivera has been instrumental in reigniting growth in the U.S. business, the Company's largest Zone. Abrams-Rivera will assume the title of North America Zone President.

The North America Zone structure will include three commercial business units that will be organized around the Company's consumer-driven product platforms and geographic needs, including:

  • Taste, Meals, and Away From Home will be led by Pedro Navio, currently President of Latin America, and includes the Taste Elevation and Easy Meals Made Better consumer platforms as well as the U.S. foodservice and ingredient businesses
  • Fresh, Beverages, and Desserts will be led by Steve Cornell, currently President - Enhancers, Specialty, and Away From Home, and includes the Fast Fresh Meals, Easy Indulgent Desserts, Real Food Snacking, and Flavorful Hydration consumer platforms
