| Posted: 08 Nov 2021 09:30 AM PST SEATTLE, Nov. 8, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Today at the 17 th Grand Challenges Annual Meeting, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced an initial commitment of $50 million to support science and innovation in low- and middle-income countries. The Grand Challenges Global Call to Action is a 10-year initiative that will prioritize grants to scientists from low- and middle-income countries and support a balanced representation of women principal investigators. This long-term initiative is designed to ensure scientists and institutions in low- and middle-income countries play a central role in shaping the global R&D agenda and developing solutions that can better meet the needs of their communities. Initial focus areas will include data science, such as mathematical modeling to inform national malaria control programs; digital health services for pregnant women; and innovations to close gaps identified by current programs for eliminating neglected tropical diseases. "We need the ideas and leadership of the people who are closest to the global health challenges we're working to address," said Mark Suzman, CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. "The Grand Challenges Global Call to Action represents our commitment to advance innovation and equity while strengthening local partners in a sustainable way." At the annual meeting, which takes place November 8-11, the foundation will also launch the Global Immunology and Immune Sequencing for Epidemic Response (GIISER)program, which works to ensure scientists have the capacity to rapidly detect if new SARS-CoV-2 variants in their communities show signs of evading immune response. This will allow national and regional stakeholders to respond appropriately and develop products that meet the specific needs of their geographies. GIISER will operate as a decentralized network of autonomous and geographically distinct hubs that are able to connect local pathogen sequencing data and clinical epidemiology with local immunological understanding and tools. As part of this program, the foundation will provide $7 million over two years to investigative teams in eight countries ( South Africa, Senegal, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Brazil, and India) to expand their existing immunological capacity. To further support scientists who are developing the innovations needed to end the pandemic and address urgent global health priorities, the foundation will announce the first cohort of the Calestous Juma Science Leadership Fellowship programon the second day of the meeting ( November 9). Named after the late Calestous Juma, one of the world's foremost visionaries in African-led science, the fellowship was launched at last year's annual meeting to support the next generation of scientific leaders in Africa. The inaugural cohort includes 14 fellows from eight African countries—eight women and six men—who are leading projects that range from computational drug discovery to molecular epidemiology. Each fellow will receive up to $1 million over five years. The Grand Challenges Annual Meeting is a global forum for researchers around the world to share their work, learn about cutting-edge advances in the field, and collaborate with other investigators and organizations. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to drive inequity across the globe, this year's meeting will focus on strengthening scientific collaborations to end the pandemic everywhere and promoting an inclusive recovery. The 2021 fully virtual meeting is hosted by Global Grand Challenges partners and co-sponsored by Grand Challenges Canada, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Wellcome, the Bill & Melinda Gates Medical Research Institute (Gates MRI), and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Speakers at this year's meeting include:
The event will feature dozens of leaders from across the global health innovation landscape, as well as Gates Foundation leadership, including Bill Gates (Co-Chair & Trustee); Melinda French Gates (Co-Chair & Trustee); Mark Suzman (Chief Executive Officer); and Trevor Mundel (President, Global Health Division). The sessions will be posted shortly after the meeting at grandchallenges.org/annual-meeting. About Grand Challenges The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation recognizes that solving the most pressing challenges in global health and development requires more of the world's brightest minds working on them. The Grand Challenges family of initiatives seeks to engage innovators from around the world to solve these challenges. Grand Challenges initiatives are united by their focus on fostering innovation, directing research to where it will have the most impact, and serving those most in need. About the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Guided by the belief that every life has equal value, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation works to help all people lead healthy, productive lives. In the United States, it seeks to ensure that all people—especially those with the fewest resources—have access to the opportunities they need to succeed in school and life. | KHSC Hires Three Additional Faculty Members In October Posted: 08 Nov 2021 09:44 AM PST WICHITA, Kan., Nov. 8, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- The proposed Kansas Health Science Center - Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (KHSC-KansasCOM), currently under construction in downtown Wichita, recently appointed three additions to its faculty: Duane Brandau, DO, Ph.D., as faculty, physiology/mechanism for health & disease; Jeremy Bigham, DO, as assistant professor of family medicine/osteopathic manipulative medicine; and Robin Durrett, DO, as associate professor, western Kansas regional director. Duane Brandau, DO, Ph.D., faculty, physiology/mechanism for health & disease, comes to the proposed KHSC-KansasCOM with almost 40 years of experience in biomedical research, clinical practice, and medical education. Early in his career, he worked two years in the National Health Service Corps in Plainville, Texas, where he served as the town's pediatrician. Since then, Dr. Brandau has held various faculty positions at the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, the University of Health Sciences in Kansas City, and the University of Kansas. He was also a research scientist at Children's Mercy Hospital. Most recently, he was the director of research at Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Parker, Colorado. Jeremy Bigham, DO, assistant clinical professor of family medicine and osteopathic manipulative medicine, joins the faculty with experience as a flight surgeon, and an osteopathic family physician, and as an active reservist in the United States Air Force at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita. He was active duty for 4 years, where he served on the aerospace medicine staff providing care to active duty, reserve, guard members, and their families. He joins the proposed KHSC-KansasCOM from St. Luke Medical Clinic in Marion, Kansas, where he practiced rural family medicine. He continues his service to our country in the Air Force Reserve as the chief of medical staff at McConnell Air Force Base where he is focused on high quality care for service members. Robin Durrett, DO, associate professor, western Kansas regional director, has been in general surgery practice in Barton County, Kansas, since 1994. With the goal of opening for the 2022 academic year, the proposed KHSC-KansasCOM is working through the accreditation process. | Samsung Galaxy Tab S8+ Pops Up With Snapdragon 898 Posted: 08 Nov 2021 09:40 AM PST We've encountered numerous leaks and reports about the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 and its variants. A new leak courtesy of Geekbench is now uncovering the Galaxy Tab S8+ bearing the model number SM-X808U. This upcoming tablet is packing the Snapdragon 898 chipset underneath and is reportedly headed to the U.S. with 5G support. The Geekbench listing (via) shows the primary CPU core running at 3.0 GHz, while three are clocked at 2.5 GHz. The remaining four CPU cores run at 1.79 GHz. The Galaxy Tab S8+ is also packing Android 12 by default, likely with One UI 4, coupled with 8GB of RAM. The tablet scored a decent 1,211 on the single-core test and 3,193 on the multi-core test on Geekbench. The rest of the hardware specs remain a mystery right now, though we expect more information to follow in the weeks to come. Older leaks have said that the tablet could be available in 128GB and 256GB storage variants. A 12.4-inch 120Hz AMOLED screen is also rumored for the 'Plus' variant of the Galaxy Tab S8. The Galaxy Tab S8 lineup may not launch until 2022We also expect the tablet to be available with the Exynos 2200 SoC, especially for global markets. A 10,090 mAh battery is also likely to be on board, backed by 45W fast charging support. The company will likely offer the tablets in 5G, LTE, and Wi-Fi-only variants. Thanks to past leaks, we've learned that Samsung will also reveal an Ultra version of the Galaxy Tab S8. Separately, some renders of the standard Galaxy Tab S8 appeared late last month, revealing minimal changes from the predecessor. One key design difference is the positioning of the magnetic S-Pen holder on the rear panel. The flagship Galaxy Tab S series is usually refreshed in August. However, Samsung may have delayed the release of the tablet due to the persistent global semiconductor shortage. So there's still some mystery around the release date of the new Galaxy Tab S8. Reports from earlier this year indicated that the company could push the release of the new tablet lineup to 2022, which seems highly likely at the moment. Samsung's Galaxy S21 FE was also delayed due to similar factors, with the phone's release now scheduled for early 2022. The post Samsung Galaxy Tab S8+ Pops Up With Snapdragon 898 appeared first on Android Headlines. | ||

| Posted: 08 Nov 2021 09:30 AM PST BOSTON, Nov. 8, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Beacon Biosignals, a neurotechnology company applying artificial intelligence to EEG (electroencephalography) to unlock precision medicine for any condition affecting the brain, has announced an oversubscribed $27M Series A financing led by General Catalyst and with participation from Casdin Capital. Proceeds will be used to scale Beacon's computational biomarker discovery platform and address the massive unmet need for quantitative clinical trial endpoints, safety tools, and computational diagnostics for neurology, psychiatry, and sleep medicine. Founded in 2019 by MD/PhDs and engineers from Harvard and MIT, Beacon's launch was propelled by the vision of a computing platform designed to scale the interrogation of large brainwave datasets with unprecedented throughput and capability. Beacon Biosignals holds one of the world's largest clinical EEG databases and couples that data with proprietary machine learning algorithms to identify neurobiomarkers associated with patient sub-types, drug activity and therapeutic efficacy. EEG is standard of care in the clinical diagnosis and management of many neurologic diseases and sleep disorders, but features of clinical significance are often buried in hours of EEG data. Broader uptake of EEG technology has been further limited by labor-intensive workflows and variability in clinician expert interpretation. Beacon's machine learning teams develop high-performing, reliable algorithms that can replicate the adjudicated consensus interpretation of multiple trained epileptologists, as well as novel neurobiomarkers (e.g. quantitative epileptiform spike burden) that exceed human capabilities over many hours or days of recording. Beacon's platform provides an architectural foundation for robust, data-tailored neurobiomarker pipelines that carry new discoveries from development to targeted deployment into clinical trials and novel therapeutic areas. "Our current progress has demonstrated that EEG is incredibly information-rich physiologic output reflecting genetic substrate, accumulated exposures and acute neurophysiologic changes, beyond what is captured in MRI, fMRI, CSF analyses or genetic analyses. We have already identified novel electrophysiologic signatures functionally linked to primary cognitive endpoints in Alzheimer's disease. We're further encouraged by the applications of our platform toward heterogenous psychiatric diseases such as schizophrenia and major depressive disorder," said Jacob Donoghue MD, PhD, Co-Founder and CEO of Beacon. "Beacon is dedicated to helping our biopharma partners accelerate novel therapeutics to reach patients with significant unmet need. We are excited to partner with General Catalyst and Casdin Capital to scale our platform to drive new insights for patient stratification, PK/PD, and efficacy endpoints." The announced Series A financing will enable Beacon to pursue new partnerships with leading pharma and biotech companies, and build on existing partnerships with Novartis, Praxis Precision Medicines, Cyclerion Therapeutics, Idorsia and other undisclosed leading biopharma and operational partners. "The breadth and variety of successes we've had working with our pharma partners demonstrates just how critical it is to quantifiably measure the effects novel therapeutics have on the brain," said Donoghue. "Reliable and replicable quantitative endpoints help drive faster, better-powered trials." Beacon's platform is engineered to adapt to any EEG data source and maximize the scientific impact of biopharma partners' highest-priority clinical trials. In smaller phase 1 trials, application of quantitative physiologic biomarkers enables precise characterization of dose-related therapeutic neuroactivity, provides mechanistic insights and identifies novel primary or supplementary endpoints. By identifying variance across patient subgroups, these capabilities further inform trial enrollment criteria or help identify target responder populations. Neurobiomarkers can also be used to detect evolving disease to identify patients who are candidates for early intervention. With the announced Series A financing, Beacon will further invest in building out its network of expert neurologists for database curation and AI-augmented safety assessment reporting. Beacon Biosignals' Series A financing totals $27M, led by General Catalyst with participation from Casdin Capital, existing seed investors and new angel investors including Andy Beck, CEO of PathAI. This capital brings Beacon Biosignals' total funding to date to $30 million. As part of the deal, Robin Washington will join Beacon Biosignals' board of directors. Robin was previously CFO at Gilead and currently holds board seats at Alphabet (the parent company of Google), Salesforce and Honeywell. "It is now common knowledge that machine learning technologies will impact all corners of healthcare, but Beacon Biosignals is uniquely positioned to rapidly translate scientific and technical advances into clinical benefit for patients. We're excited to partner with Beacon as they build the future of predictive brain health analytics," said Hemant Taneja, Managing Partner of General Catalyst. Robin Washington, Beacon's incoming board member, adds "Beacon's team has an unparalleled depth of expertise across clinical medicine, neurotechnology, machine learning and engineering. The traction with current partners is a clear signal of the value that Beacon contributes to cutting-edge clinical development programs reaching millions of patients." About Beacon Biosignals Beacon's machine learning platform for EEG enables and accelerates new treatments that transform the lives of patients with neurological, psychiatric or sleep disorders. Through novel machine learning algorithms, large datasets, and advances in software engineering, Beacon Biosignals is changing the way patients are treated for disorders of the brain.
