| Posted: 29 Jul 2021 10:42 AM PDT ARLINGTON, Texas, July 29, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is recommending its member cities adopt Appendix L of the International Fire Code, which would mandate the installation of firefighter air replenishment systems (FARS) in construction of new high-rise buildings, big-box style horizontal structures, and other large buildings in their jurisdictions. FARS are a standpipe for air, the latest technology in building-installed firefighter life safety systems. FARS deliver a safe, instant supply of air replenishment to firefighters so they can survive in the toxic, smoky environment of a structure fire. Just as water standpipes replaced water buckets as a delivery system, FARS replaces the "bottle brigade" of firefighters who must hand-carry replacement air bottles up dozens of flights of stairs, or deep into structures, to provide air replenishment to fire crews. With FARS, firefighters can refill their air bottles in 2 minutes or less under full respiration at fill stations located throughout a building -- a much faster, safer, more reliable way to resupply air and avoid the poisonous effects of smoke. More than 25 cities in Texas now require FARS, including Midland, Plano, and Frisco. In May of 2021, members of the Frisco Fire Department successfully used a FARS to refill their air bottles during a working fire in a 12-story residential high-rise. There were no injuries. The NCTCOG amendments are available for any jurisdiction to adopt throughout the county, andnumerous cities throughout the state are expected to adopt FARS in this code cycle. Nationwide, FARS are now required in cities in 20 states. "Breathing air is critical for firefighting operations," said NCTCOG in their reason statement supporting the recommendation. "Historically, fire departments have supplied air bottles by manually transporting air bottles up stairways or across long distances in a building, which is an extraordinarily intensive process and takes firefighters away from their primary mission of rescue and firefighting. The FARS technology in Appendix L exists to address this issue using in-building air supply systems. Many jurisdictions in North Texas and across the country have already adopted this Appendix and are enforcing and installing these systems to improve life safety of firefighters and enhance their firefighting capabilities in an emergency incident, which is one of the reasons for recommending this Appendix for adoption -- to ensure regional consistency as well as to improve mutual emergency aid among jurisdictions in North Texas. " NCTCOG's Regional Codes Coordinating Committee and its five advisory boards conducted multiple meetings over the past few months to review the latest editions of model codes and develop regional amendments. Their review and recommendations are endorsed by NCTCOG's Executive Board, which is encouraging that member cities adopt the FARS code and other model construction codes as expeditiously as their local code adoption process will allow. "As buildings become larger and more complex, delivery of air by hand becomes more problematic, and takes valuable personnel away from fire attack and search and rescue. FARS solves that problem. It's an important tool that visionary fire chiefs and progressive city management across the country are recognizing as a way to manage growth and make a dangerous job safer. The Government of Canada is working to ensure that every dollar spent in infrastructure achieves triple benefits - that is, grows our economy and create jobs, tackles climate change and contributes to building a more resilient and inclusive country for all. Key to this work is Canada's National Infrastructure Assessment, which will provide independent advice based on data, varied expertise and broad engagement, on how infrastructure investments can best achieve these objectives. Today, the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities joined Tamara Vrooman, Chair of the Canada Infrastructure Bank and Jan De Silva, President & CEO of Toronto Region Board of Trade, to release the recommendations for Moving Forward on the National Infrastructure Assessment that summarizes consultation findings to inform the National Infrastructure Assessment. Launched last March, the consultation - named "Building the Canada We Want in 2050" - sought input from the public, Indigenous communities and organizations, provinces, territories, municipalities, and stakeholders on three main priorities of the assessment:
Over 300 organizations and individuals shared their views and ideas, providing essential information on how the National Infrastructure Assessment might address these three priorities. Their submissions were clear. There is strong support for an independent advisory body to lead an evidence-based process to identify Canada's infrastructure needs over the near, medium, and long term in order to achieve critical economic, social, and environmental outcomes. This initiative should leverage global best practices and domestic expertise; identify Canada's infrastructure needs and deficit; and develop a strategic roadmap for infrastructure investments that meet our needs and drive us to net-zero emissions. The pandemic has caused economic challenges, making it even more critical to create jobs, and accelerate growth. Coupled with the need to address the climate crisis and address disparities to promote inclusion and resilience, long-term and well-coordinated investments in infrastructure have become even more important. We now have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build the Canada we want as we invest in our recovery. It is a critical time to build a more prosperous, inclusive and resilient Canada together, and this Assessment will help us get there with a more strategic, longer-term approach to infrastructure decisions. | Samsung Has Some Funky Cases In Offer For The Galaxy Z Flip 3 Posted: 29 Jul 2021 10:46 AM PDT  The wait for Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 foldables is almost over. The devices will go official on August 11. But we already know pretty much everything about both phones, thanks to an enormous amount of leaks over the past couple of months. So much so that there's no point keeping the new foldables or their accessories secret anymore. A new leak now gives us a look at the official case designs for the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The leaked case renders show that Samsung will offer a wide range of choices when it comes to protective cases for its upcoming clamshell folding phone. As you can see in the images below, one of the cases has a ring attached to it. Another has a kind of hook with a strap that features the "Flip" branding. This ring or hook could be used to attach the device to a lanyard, so you could wear it around the neck.         The strap also covers a portion of the hinge area, offering an additional layer of protection. Otherwise, the cases expectedly come in two separate pieces that leave the hinge area uncovered when the device is folded. The handset is mostly covered from the back when unfolded though, except for a tiny gap between the two halves of the case. The cases feature large cutouts on the upper half, confirming the presence of a bigger secondary display and a dual-camera array. There's also a tiny hole for an LED flash. We can further see the position of the volume rockers and the power button. They both sit on the right side, with the latter doubling up as a fingerprint scanner. There's a centrally-located cutout for the USB Type-C port at the bottom. Nothing to surprise here. Talking about color options, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 protective case with the ring attachment will reportedly be available in clear and purple colors. Other cases may come in Blue, Black, Silver, Purple, Yellow, and Gold color options. Material choices may include both silicone and leather.         Multiple Galaxy Z Flip 3 leaks have bared it allWe have seen so many Galaxy Z Flip 3 leaks over the past few months that there's hardly anything left to the imagination. The device will bring improvements all around, both in terms of performance and durability. For the first time in foldables, Samsung is offering an official IP rating (IPX8 for both Fold 3 and Flip 3). These cases will provide some added protection, though you'll still need to handle the device with utmost care. Of course, there will be tons of choices from third-party case manufacturers as well. These leaked cases are part of official accessories from Samsung. Expect to see more of them once the phone goes official on August 11th. But considering how frequently Galaxy Z Flip 3 leaks have come in the past, it shouldn't be surprising if we have few more leaks before the official unveiling a couple of weeks from now.
