Google To Soon Add New Assistant Trigger For Android Phones

In an APK teardown of the latest Google app by XDA Developers, Google is expected to add one more Assistant trigger for Android phones.

FYI, Google Assistant already has multiple triggers on Android phones. Triggers mean the words that you can say to activate or summon the Google Assistant on your Android phone.

You can trigger Google Assistant by saying "OK Google" or "Hey Google." Apart from this, you can also wake up Google Assistant by long-pressing the home button or performing a swipe-up gesture if you are using full-screen gestures.

There is a Pixel exclusive feature that lets you trigger Google Assistant by squeezing the sides of the phone. On some Nokia and LG phones, there is a dedicated button.

Now, in the APK teardown post of the latest Google app version 12.18.6.29, some new strings have been spotted, which gives us a hint that Google has started working on adding one more trigger.

Looking at the strings, you may soon trigger Assistant by long-pressing the power button. Interestingly, this is not a new thing for some Chinese OEM smartphones.

As noted by XDA, there is several Chinese OEM smartphone's Android custom skin that allows you to trigger Google Assistant via the power button.

However, it is nice to see Google finally bringing this feature directly into the Google app. But do note that the features or functionalities discovered in an APK teardown are not guaranteed to make their way to the final version of the app.

It all depends on Google whether they want to bring this feature to their app or not. Here are the strings that XDA found during APK teardown, for your reference:

Once Google pushes this new function of triggering Google Assistant with the Google app update, you will be able to turn this feature ON by heading over to the Assistant settings on your phone.

With the latest Android 12 operating system, the new option will appear within the Apps section in your phone's Settings menu. For devices running Android 11 or lower, this new functionality will be available under the Apps & Notification section of the Settings app.

Folks at XDA, although found the feature on Pixel 3 running Android 12 DP3, they weren't able to enable it. Notably, the Assistant Settings page kept crashing.

Apart from this new Assistant trigger function, some new strings have been spotted that will make it easier for you to make payments while your phone is connected to Android Auto.

How Do Credit Card Debt Management Plans Work?

However, you don't have to face your creditors alone. Many credit counseling agencies offer debt management plans (DMPs), which allow a counselor to act as an intermediary on your behalf.

How Do Debt Management Plans Work?

Credit counseling agencies offer many services aimed at helping consumers manage their personal finances. A DMP is specifically for helping people who are overwhelmed by unsecured debts. Secured debts, such as auto loans and mortgages, generally can't be part of a DMP.

  • A single, consolidated payment.After starting a DMP, you'll make a single payment to the credit counseling agency, which will then forward the appropriate amounts to your creditors.
  • Potentially lower payments and fees.Your counselor may be able to negotiate lower interest rates, lower monthly payments, and fee waivers for your enrolled accounts.
  • Bring accounts current. Your creditors may also agree to bring past-due accounts current without you having to pay off the entire balance at once. You can then make on-time payments that help your FICO ® Scores over time, and debt collectors may stop contacting you about those accounts.
  • A plan to pay off debt.The goal is to make your monthly payments more manageable and pay off the included debts within three to five years.

You may need to agree to certain terms to qualify for a DMP. For example, you might have to close or stop using all your credit cards while enrolled in the DMP. Although, sometimes, you can keep one card open for emergencies.

There's also often a one-time setup fee and a monthly fee to participate in a DMP. The fees can vary depending on the agency and your state, and they could be more than offset by the savings that your counselor negotiates. Agencies may also offer waivers for low-income applicants.

When Should You Consider a Debt Management Plan?

A DMP could be a good fit if you're struggling to afford your credit card bills and living expenses but can afford to pay something each month. There's no income or FICO ® Score requirement, and you could consider reaching out to a credit counseling agency to discuss a DMP if:

  • You're behind or have trouble with credit card bills
  • You're unsure of how to manage your living expenses and debts
  • You want help negotiating with your creditors
  • You can't afford the lump sum payment to bring past-due accounts current
  • Collection agencies  won't stop calling you

How Debt Management Plans Can Impact Your FICO ® Scores

After you sign up for a DMP, your creditors may add a notation to your account that you're working with a credit counselor. The notation won't impact your FICO ® Scores, although other creditors may be able to see it in your credit reports.

Additionally, the actions you'll take while participating in the DMP might impact your FICO ® Scores in different ways:

  • It may be easier to make on-time payments, which can help you build a positive payment history .
  • Bringing past-due accounts current could help you avoid new late payments that may otherwise hurt your FICO ® Scores.
  • Closing your revolving accounts might impact your utilization ratio on revolving accounts .

In the long run, paying off your balances can also be better for your FICO ® Scores than settling a debt for less than the full amount.

How To Get Started With a Debt Management Plan

If you think a DMP might help you better manage your credit card debt, the first step is to reach out to a reputable credit counseling agency.

You could look for an agency that's part of the FICO ® Score Open Access for Credit and Financial Counseling program, which lets your counselor share your FICO Score with you for free. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling can also be a good starting point.

You'll then have a one-on-one meeting with a credit counselor from the agency to review and discuss your personal finances. The initial meeting is often free, and you may want to meet with counselors from several agencies to compare their DMP suggestions and the cost. After a careful analysis, the counselor may share the pros and cons of different options, including budgeting , bankruptcy, or a DMP.

When a DMP is a good fit, you'll work with your counselor to determine which accounts to include. Your counselor will then reach out to your creditors with a proposal. Creditors don't have to agree to a DMP, but they may be open to it if you won't be able to afford your payments otherwise.

You'll then set up your payment with the credit counselor, as you'll now be paying them rather than your creditors directly. However, you may need to contact your creditors to change your accounts' due dates to align with your DMP payment.

Once you're going, your consolidated monthly payment could stay the same for the duration of the DMP. As you pay off accounts, your counselor can redistribute the money to your other creditors, helping you get out of debt sooner and pay less interest overall.

Ideally, you can stay the course and pay off your debt within five years or less. However, reach out to your counselor right away if you might have trouble affording a DMP payment. Your counselor may also be able to help you review your options for managing debts that aren't included in the debt management plan.

Banker Optimism Soars On State Of U.S. Economy

ARLINGTON, Va., May 11, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Optimism about the current state of the U.S. economy skyrocketed in the first quarter of 2021, according to a survey of more than 500 bankers released Tuesday by IntraFi Network.

Sixty-two percent of those surveyed said overall economic conditions for their bank had improved compared to 12 months ago, a significant 38-percentage point jump on this measure from the 4th quarter of 2020. Bankers also see a brighter future ahead, with 57% saying they expect improved conditions during the 12 months ahead, a 19-percentage point rise from a quarter earlier. 

"Projections on the economy have swung wildly over the past 12 months, but bankers are growing more confident that it's on the right track," said Mark Jacobsen, Cofounder and CEO of IntraFi Network. "While challenges clearly remain, it's clear most bankers are optimistic about the future."

Despite record levels of stimulus funding and a highly accommodative monetary policy, only 26% of respondents predicted inflation will rise enough to spur the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates by the end of the year.

A sizable majority of executives (62%) believe Congress and the President should finance all or part of the Biden Administration's more than $2 trillion infrastructure initiative with tax increases, spending cuts, deficit spending, or a combination of the three.

Even with the wider availability of COVID-19 vaccines, 41% of bankers predicted they will wait until after July 1 to restore customer-facing staffing to pre-COVID levels. Another 8% said their operations may never return to pre-COVID levels.

Bank executives also continue to view cryptocurrencies with skepticism, even as they have grown in popularity with certain investors. A large majority (77%) of bankers surveyed said they do not plan on including cryptocurrencies in their five-year business plan.

This survey garnered responses from CEOs, presidents, and CFOs at 515 unique banks nationwide.

  • Funding Costs — Bank funding costs remain at favorable levels as only 4% of respondents reported a rise in costs during the previous 12 months. Twenty-nine percent projected costs to decrease further in the year ahead.
  • Deposit Competition — Twenty percent of respondents predicted deposit competition would decrease in the next 12 months; 51% expected it to remain unchanged.
  • Loan Demand — Sixty-two percent of respondents expected loan demand to improve over the next year, a jump of 14 percentage points from the previous quarter.
  • Access to Capital — Only 4% of respondents predicted access to capital would worsen in the next 12 months; 74% expected it to stay the same.
