Усложнение потребностей, рост влияния городских нравов на деревню обусловили смену лаптей валяными сапогами, а вместе с тем и широкое развитие валяльно-катального производства. Шерсть Романовской породы овец считается лучшим сырьем для производства валенок, так как отличается высокой валкоспособностью . В 1904 году в Ярославской губернии было основано крупнейшее на тот момент предприятие по производству валенок - сапоговаляльный завод И.С. Кашина, ныне Ярославская фабрика валяной обуви. Целебные валенки Деревенские старики, которые и сами даже летом катанок не снимают, уверяют, что, если ребенок хотя бы до десяти лет проходил в валеночках, он уже никогда ничем не заболеет.
